# Study in Switzerland from India

## What changed recently

- Since autumn 2025: ETH and EPFL charge foreign students CHF 2,190 a semester (threefold).
- From autumn 2026: Bern charges foreign students CHF 2,550 a semester (CHF 850 + CHF 1,700).
- From autumn 2027: the ETH ESOP scholarship rises to CHF 13,500 a semester (from CHF 12,000).
- From 2027: the radio/TV fee falls to CHF 312 per household a year (from CHF 335).

## Studying in Switzerland from India: 9 things to know

Switzerland charges foreign students low tuition, from CHF 500 a semester at UNIGE to CHF 3,557.50 for an HSG master’s, but master’s deadlines are early and graduates get only 6 months to find a job.

1. **Federal law, cantonal decision.** The rules on study permits are national (FNIA art. 27, SEM directives), but the **migration office of the canton where the student will live decides**, and cantons set the funds amount and practice.
2. **Master's deadlines are early.** Autumn 2027: **ETH 1–30 November 2026** (no spring entry); **EPFL by 15 December** (advised for visa applicants; second round to 31 March); **UZH, UNIGE, UNIL 28 February** for visa applicants; Basel and Bern 30 April; HSG 31 March or 30 April by programme.
3. **Tuition is low but tiered for foreign students** (per semester): ETH and EPFL **CHF 2,190** (threefold, since autumn 2025); Bern **CHF 2,550** (CHF 850 + CHF 1,700 from autumn 2026); HSG master's **CHF 3,557.50**; UZH CHF 820; Basel CHF 850; UNIL CHF 580; UNIGE CHF 500.
4. **3-year Indian bachelor's: accepted by length** at every university checked (3 years / 180 ECTS minimum); ETH and EPFL are highly selective. **No direct bachelor's from Class XII:** cantonal universities ask for a completed 3-year university degree; ETH and EPFL require entrance exams.
5. **Funds by canton:** Zurich **CHF 21,000 a year**; Basel-Stadt **CHF 2,000 a month** (University of Basel: CHF 24,000); Geneva **CHF 20,000 a year**; Vaud about **CHF 2,000 a month plus housing** (UNIL: CHF 2,100); St. Gallen **CHF 2,000 a month**; Bern **CHF 18,000** (University of Bern; the canton prints no figure). Zurich, Basel and Bern want the money in the student's own name at a FINMA-listed bank (St. Gallen: a bank or PostFinance in Switzerland), or a guarantee from a solvent Swiss resident; Zurich and Basel refuse parents' accounts and letters. Proved again every year.
6. **Visa: national D visa through VFS Global** (14 centres); all Indian applications go to the Embassy in New Delhi, and the canton decides. Apply **at least 3 months** before entry; an interview at the Swiss mission is standard.
7. **Work: 15 hours a week in term, from 6 months after the start**, full-time in semester holidays, only with a permit the employer applies for.
8. **After graduating: 6 months to find a job** (not extendable; up to 15 hours of work a week meanwhile). A Swiss-graduate hire skips the Swiss/EU priority test if the job is of high scientific or economic interest, but the permit still counts against the third-country quota (**8,500 in 2026**).
9. **Study permits are temporary:** 8-year cap on study stays; study years count toward permanent residence only after 2 more years on a non-study permit.

## How do Swiss universities and master’s degrees work?

A Swiss master’s takes 1.5–2 years (90–120 ECTS), at 12 accredited universities (including ETH Zurich and EPFL) or universities of applied sciences. A study permit needs full-time study of at least 20 hours a week; MAS, DAS and CAS are not degrees.

- **Types:** 12 accredited universities (incl. the two federal institutes ETH Zurich and EPFL) · universities of applied sciences (BFH, FHNW, HES-SO, OST, SUPSI, ZHAW…) · universities of teacher education · a few accredited institutes (IMD, IHEID, Franklin, Glion, César Ritz). The Swiss Accreditation Council accredits.
- **Degrees:** bachelor's at least 3 years (180 ECTS); master's 1.5–2 years (90–120 ECTS), mostly consecutive; specialised master's have extra conditions. A 30-ECTS minor is not a programme.
- **Not degrees:** MAS, DAS, CAS and Executive MBA/Executive Master are continuing education.
- **Courses that do not lead to a study permit or the job-search permit:** a study permit needs a **full-time school with at least 20 hours a week**; evening schools do not qualify; UNIL excludes non-EU students from part-time study. The job-search permit needs a degree from a Swiss university, federal institute or university of applied sciences. **Courses that lead to both: full-time bachelor's and master's at these institutions;** part-time-only, evening, MAS/DAS/CAS, Executive programmes and private schools do not.
- **Admission:** selection by each university, no national cut-off (medicine apart). ETH weighs grades, university ranking, GRE (some programmes), motivation and references. Conditions of up to 30 (ETH) or 60 (UZH, Basel) credits are possible.
- **A second master's** in the same field is usually refused (EPFL, UZH), and UZH says visas are normally refused for a degree at the same level.
- **Language:** about 490 of 1,245 registered master's are taught in English, or English with another language (ETH 44 of 45). German, French or Italian matters for daily life, a spouse's permit and permanent residence.
- **Intake:** autumn (classes mid-September).
- **Where cantons differ:** funds amount and form; Zurich asks applicants over 30 to justify the choice and admits no students under 18 (federal rule: age is no ground for refusal); Geneva allows 40 hours of work in holidays; Vaud accepts an account abroad, a parent's account with a support letter, or a bank loan or scholarship as proof.

## Can I apply with an Indian degree, and is a 3-year bachelor’s accepted?

Yes: every university checked accepts a 3-year Indian bachelor’s (3 years / 180 ECTS minimum), but ETH and EPFL are highly selective, and the Embassy asks for TOEFL or IELTS for the visa.

- **Master's (information only):** a recognised bachelor's of at least 3 years / 180 ECTS (EPFL: a programme of at least 3–4 years); UZH: from a state-accredited university, giving master's eligibility in India, with no equivalency certificates; UNIL: the degree must be awarded, and programmes with over 15 ECTS of internships do not count; Basel: no distance or evening programmes; Bern: no executive master's or certificates. ETH lists minimum percentages per programme in its requirement profiles.
- **Final-year students:** proof by 30 September (UZH, EPFL).
- **English:** ETH needs C1 from its own list (TOEFL/IELTS no older than 2 years). UZH: **IELTS 7.0** (6.5 speaking and writing), TOEFL iBT 100 or 5 on the new scale; Bern (example): IELTS 7, TOEFL 95. EPFL: test scores welcome, not compulsory. **The Embassy asks for TOEFL or IELTS for the visa.**
- **English-medium degree instead of a test:** ETH exempts a bachelor's taught entirely in English, confirmed by the university's central administration (not teachers). For UZH and Bern, whether India counts is not stated: **confirm with the university before applying**.
- **Bachelor's from Class XII:** CBSE, ISC, state HSC and Intermediate certificates are recognised, but cantonal universities require a completed 3-year university degree; ETH requires a study place at a recognised Indian university plus its reduced entrance exam; EPFL its entrance exam.
- **No national pre-check** before applying (Swiss ENIC issues non-binding level certificates on request).

## How do I apply to a Swiss university?

You apply to each university directly, online, with a fee of CHF 65–268 that is not refunded. Deadlines are early: ETH 1–30 November, EPFL by 15 December, and UZH, UNIGE and UNIL 28 February for visa applicants.

- **Directly to each university** (online; Bern also wants hard copies by post).
- **Application fees:** EPFL CHF 150, UZH CHF 150, UNIL CHF 200, HSG CHF 268, Bern CHF 150 (+ CHF 100 registration), Basel CHF 100, UNIGE CHF 65. Not refunded.
- **Usual documents:** CV, degree and **all** transcripts (UNIGE: even failed ones), passport, statement of purpose (EPFL max. 1,000 words), references (EPFL: three academic referees who upload themselves), language certificate, official translations if not in English/French/German/Italian.
- **Decisions:** EPFL late March (December round); UZH up to 3 months; Bern 6–8 weeks.
- **Enrolment:** UZH matriculation in person after arrival (fees paid then); EPFL admission valid for the next academic year only. EPFL: no point continuing the visa if you cannot be on campus by 30 September.

## How much does it cost, and how much money must I show?

Foreign students pay CHF 500–3,557.50 a semester, and the canton where you will live sets the funds amount: CHF 21,000 a year in Zurich, CHF 20,000 in Geneva, proved again every year.

- **Tuition:** see key facts. The foreign rate is decided by residence when the school-leaving qualification was obtained, not by passport; ETH assigns the fee group once, with no change later.
- **Scholarship:** **ETH ESOP**: CHF 12,000 a semester (CHF 13,500 from autumn 2027) plus a fee waiver; apply 1–30 November. UZH gives financial aid only to holders of a Swiss bachelor's.
- **Proof of funds, national forms:** a confirmation from a bank authorised in Switzerland (FINMA list), a guarantee declaration by a solvent person living in Switzerland, or a firm scholarship or loan guarantee in a stable currency. No national amount; each canton sets its own (key fact 5).
- **By canton:**
  - **Zurich:** a FINMA-listed bank (a Swiss bank, or a foreign bank with a branch in Switzerland) confirms CHF 21,000 in the student's own name, in CHF, EUR or USD; or a Swiss-resident guarantor; or a binding scholarship or education-loan commitment **in CHF, EUR, USD or yen**. Parents' accounts and support letters are refused. Whether a loan sanctioned in rupees counts is not stated: **confirm with the Zurich Migration Office before applying**.
  - **Basel:** an account in the student's name at a FINMA-listed bank, a Swiss-resident guarantor, or a scholarship; no blocked accounts or parents' accounts (University of Basel).
  - **Bern, St. Gallen:** a FINMA-listed bank (St. Gallen: a bank or PostFinance in Switzerland) or a Swiss-resident guarantor.
  - **Geneva:** a statement from a bank recognised in Switzerland, a guarantor (abroad only if a parent or sibling), or any other proof of CHF 20,000 or CHF 2,500 a month.
  - **Vaud:** a bank account in Switzerland or abroad (a parent's account with a support letter), a guarantor in Switzerland or abroad (attested by the Swiss embassy), or a scholarship or loan decision.
  - **Ticino, Fribourg, Neuchâtel:** not confirmed. **Confirm with the cantonal migration office before applying.**
- **Which document when:** the visa file handed in at VFS goes to the canton and is the permit application, so the canton's proof must be in it, alongside the Embassy's sponsor documents. The canton asks again at each yearly renewal.
- **Living costs:** Zurich about **CHF 22,100 a year** (ETH; rent average CHF 11,300); Lausanne about **CHF 2,050–2,107 a month**; St. Gallen CHF 25,000–30,000 a year in total.
- **Other charges:** radio/TV fee CHF 335 per household a year (CHF 312 from 2027); Vaud residence tax often CHF 37 a month; AHV contribution from age 20; health insurance (see below); private liability insurance.

## How do I get a Swiss student visa from India?

You apply for a national D visa through VFS Global at least 3 months before entry. The file goes to the Embassy in New Delhi, the canton decides, and an interview at the Swiss mission is standard.

- **National D visa** (stays over 90 days); on arrival a **B permit** (L if under a year). Applications in India go through **VFS Global** (Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune) to the Embassy in New Delhi. Applicants should be living in India for at least the last six months.
- **Embassy checklist:** passport (issued within 10 years, valid 3 months beyond return), 4 photos, 3 forms, signed cover letter (reasons, plans, benefit, leaving after studies), CV, admission letter, school and university certificates (original + 2 colour copies, no "TRUE COPY"/"NOTARY" stamps), **TOEFL or IELTS**, sponsor letter explaining the origin of funds with the sponsor's **ITR-V for 2 years** and 3 months of bank statements. The file is forwarded to the canton, which decides, so the canton's funds proof goes in the same file (Zurich: CHF 21,000 at a FINMA-listed bank in the student's name). The checklist names no amount.
- **Fees:** the student checklist says the visa is free; the Embassy's 2026 price list shows CHF 82 / INR 9,600 for an adult visa without a student exemption: **confirm with VFS/the Embassy before applying**. Cantonal fees follow (Zurich CHF 95 + about CHF 184 at registration; Vaud about CHF 210–240 in total).
- **Interview:** standard at the Swiss mission: family, studies, why Switzerland, plans after returning, expected salary in India. Refusals often come from doubts about leaving after studies, a degree already held at the same level, or an incomplete file. Appeals follow cantonal procedure (Embassy fee CHF 200).
- **Timing:** Vaud about 4 weeks plus 2–3 weeks' transmission; Geneva 6–8 weeks.
- **A tourist visa cannot be converted** into a study permit.
- **Family:** possible, not a right. The canton **may** admit the spouse and children under 18 of a B-permit student if there is suitable housing, no reliance on social assistance, and the spouse has A1 in the local language (or is enrolled in a course). Apply within 5 years (children over 12: within 12 months). A spouse admitted with a B-permit holder may work without a separate permit. **Zurich** allows it for students at Swiss universities; other cantons: **confirm with the cantonal migration office before applying** (Geneva quotes 6–8 months for family applications).

## When should I start preparing?

Start about 13 months before the autumn intake: shortlist in September–October, because ETH takes applications 1–30 November and EPFL by 15 December.

## Can I work while studying, and what happens on arrival?

You can work 15 hours a week in term from 6 months after the start, and full-time in holidays, only with a prior permit. You must register at the municipality within 14 days and prove health insurance within 3 months.

- **Registration:** at the municipality **within 14 days**; biometrics at the canton. The permit card takes a few months; the interim attestation opens a bank account but **does not allow re-entry** after leaving Switzerland.
- **Housing:** scarce. The ETH/UZH Housing Office allocation is fully booked; Bern has no university housing. Rooms: Zurich about CHF 940 a month, Lausanne CHF 900, Basel CHF 500–900, St. Gallen about CHF 800. Deposit up to 3 months' rent (Lausanne); landlords ask for a debt-collection certificate.
- **Health insurance (KVG):** compulsory for stays over 3 months; proof within 3 months, or the authorities assign a policy. In Zurich students can apply to SVA Zurich for exemption with equivalent private cover or a Swiss student policy; switching from study to work ends the student option. Non-EU students: from about CHF 113–120 a month (EPFL).
- **Work:** 15 hours a week in term after 6 months (no wait for jobs at the university institute in the student's field), full-time in holidays (Geneva 40 hours); every job needs a prior permit. Wages are taxed at source (Vaud: refund possible up to CHF 28,800 a year). Breaking the rules can block permit renewal.
- **Keep the permit:** renewed yearly with new proof of funds and progress (UZH: Confirmation of Matriculation with ECTS); exams within the expected time; a change of field only exceptionally (Zurich: once); 8-year maximum.
- **Absences:** a B permit lapses after more than 6 months abroad (Geneva).
- **Travel:** the permit card allows travel in the Schengen area.
- **Emergency:** police 117.

## Can I stay and work in Switzerland after graduating?

Yes, briefly: graduates get a 6-month job-search permit, not extendable, with up to 15 hours of work a week. A work permit then needs a job of high scientific or economic interest and counts against the quota.

- **Job-search permit:** **6 months**, applied for on graduation (a school confirmation is enough), with funds and housing; a legal entitlement for graduates of Swiss universities and universities of applied sciences; **not extendable**; work up to 15 hours a week.
- **Work permit:** the employer applies; a Swiss-graduate job must match the degree and be of high scientific or economic interest (e.g. shortage fields). The priority test is waived, but the quota, salary and qualification rules apply (Zurich counts these permits against the quota). Quotas 2026: 4,500 B + 4,000 L. There is no EU Blue Card in Switzerland.
- **Permanent residence (C permit):** after 10 years (the last 5 on a B), or 5 years with good local-language skills; **study years count only after 2 more years** on a non-study permit.
- **Citizenship:** 10 years of residence plus a C permit; Switzerland allows dual nationality, but Indian citizenship ends on taking another citizenship.
- **Back in India:** degree equivalence from AIU (online).

## Common mistakes Indian students make

The costliest mistakes: missing ETH’s November or EPFL’s December deadline, funds in a form the canton refuses (Zurich refuses parents’ accounts), and choosing a part-time, evening, MAS or CAS programme.

1. Missing ETH's November or EPFL's December deadline, or the 28 February deadline for visa applicants (UZH, UNIGE, UNIL).
2. Funds in the wrong form: only the Embassy's sponsor documents, when the canton wants more. Zurich needs CHF 21,000 confirmed by a FINMA-listed bank in the student's own name; parents' accounts are refused.
3. Expecting the 3-year degree to be the barrier when selection is (grades, university ranking).
4. A teacher's letter instead of the registrar's English-medium confirmation, and no TOEFL/IELTS for the visa.
5. Applying for a second master's at the same level.
6. A weak motivation letter or return plan at the visa interview.
7. Entering on a tourist visa.
8. Choosing a part-time, evening, MAS or CAS programme.
9. Missing the 14-day registration or the 3-month health-insurance deadline.
10. Working before the permit, or more than 15 hours in term.
11. Slow progress or repeated changes of field (non-renewal; 8-year cap).
12. Expecting the family to come automatically.
13. Leaving Switzerland before the permit card arrives.
14. Expecting the 6-month job search to be extendable.
