What happened
Since India allowed top-ranked foreign universities to open campuses in 2020, more than 20 have opened or are planning to. A report by Dr Rahul Choudaha of DrEducation, called Landscape of International University Campuses in India 2026, studied 13 of these branch campuses. On average, studying at one cost about 36% less than at the university's home campus abroad.
Fewer than 3,000 students are enrolled across the 13 campuses. Only three were taking Indian students before this year, and several got approval for 2026/27 late in the admissions cycle. Because the campuses are new, there is no data yet on graduate jobs or earnings, and ICEF Monitor says some families are waiting to see results.
The article lists other limits. Most campuses offer only a semester at the main campus abroad, which is not long enough to earn post-study work rights there. It is not yet known whether teaching quality matches the main campus. The report also says information on scholarships, placements and campus life is incomplete and hard to compare. Meanwhile, ICEF Monitor notes that Indian enrolments rose in 2024/25 in Germany (59,400 students), Ireland (9,175), France (9,100) and Italy (5,100).
What it means for you
- A branch campus in India may cut tuition by about a third, but the report says job outcome data is not available yet, so weigh the lower cost against the unknowns.
- Most branch campuses include only a semester abroad, which the article says is not enough for post-study work rights in the university's home country.
- Ask each campus for clear facts on scholarships, placements and faculty, since the report finds this information is often incomplete or inconsistent.
