Studying in Finland from India: 9 things to know

Finland suits Indian students who want a long job search after graduating: English-taught degrees cost about €9,000–20,000 a year, and graduates get a 2-year permit to look for work, with free work.

  1. Apply on Studyinfo, by joint or separate application. Joint application for English-taught programmes starting autumn 2027: 7–21 January 2027 (up to 6 programmes on one form). Many universities run their own separate rounds (e.g. Aalto master's 7 Dec 2026 – 5 Jan 2027). Only one study place per term can be accepted.
  2. €100 application fee (since 1 Jan 2025) for non-EU/EEA applicants. One payment covers every application for the same start term. Pay within 7 days, or the application is not processed. Never refunded.
  3. Tuition: about €9,000–20,000 a year for English-taught degrees. Master's examples: Aalto €15,000–20,000, Helsinki €13,000–18,000, LUT €15,000, Tampere €12,000, Oulu €8,500–14,000, Turku/UEF €10,000–12,000. By law, fees for students starting from 1 August 2026 must at least cover the cost of the education. Finnish- or Swedish-taught programmes and doctorates are free. No Finnish government scholarships; in year 1 most universities give only an early-bird discount.
  4. 3-year bachelor's: usually accepted for university master's (180 ECTS / 3 years at Aalto, Tampere, Oulu, Turku, UEF; no length rule at Helsinki, LUT). UAS master's require 2 years of work experience after the bachelor's; only full-time, on-campus ones qualify.
  5. Funds: €800 a month = €9,600 for the year, in the student's own account with 6 months of statements, plus the first year's tuition if not yet paid. Sponsorship agreements are not accepted.
  6. Residence permit: €600 online, applied for from India before travel; biometrics at VFS Global, New Delhi. In 2026, 82% of first student permits were decided within 30 days; a D visa lets the student fly in as soon as the permit is granted.
  7. Work: 30 hours a week on average (1,560 hours a year), full-time in holidays.
  8. After graduating: a 2-year permit to look for work, with free work. From 8 Jan 2026, a Finnish master's plus A2 Finnish/Swedish opens a permanent-residence path with no minimum stay (a job or other ground is still needed).
  9. One study place at a time (from 2027 starts): accepting a Finnish study place ends your other Finnish study rights at the same or lower level, so accepting a later offer cancels the earlier place.

How do Finnish universities and master’s degrees work?

Finland has 13 research universities and 22 universities of applied sciences (UAS). A university master’s takes 2 years and a UAS master’s 1–1.5 years; English-taught programmes charge fees, Finnish- or Swedish-taught ones are free.

Can I stay and work in Finland after graduating?

Yes: graduates can get a permit to look for work for up to 2 years, usable in up to 3 parts, with unrestricted work. From 8 Jan 2026, a Finnish master’s plus A2 Finnish or Swedish opens a permanent-residence path.

Common mistakes Indian students make

The costliest mistakes: missing the 7-day deadline for the €100 application fee, showing a sponsor’s money or a loan instead of €9,600 in your own account, and forgetting first-year tuition on top of the living funds.

  1. Missing the 7-day deadline for the €100 application fee.
  2. Showing a sponsor's money or a loan instead of €9,600 in your own account with 6 months' history.
  3. Forgetting first-year tuition on top of the living funds.
  4. An affiliated-college degree certificate, or transcripts in an unsealed or generically stamped envelope.
  5. A UAS master's without 2 years' work experience, or one built for working people or for distance study.
  6. Assuming an Indian English-medium degree waives IELTS everywhere.
  7. Travel insurance or an excess above €300.
  8. Booking flights before the permit decision.
  9. Accepting two study places for the same term, or accepting a new place without knowing it ends your other Finnish study rights.
  10. Late housing search; expecting the family to arrive at the same time.
  11. Falling under 45 credits a year, or a gap between permits.
  12. Missing an early-bird window (14 days at Jyväskylä) or paying a deposit to an unverified private landlord.
