What changed recently
- Jan 2025: registration moved from GNIB to ISD, by appointment through the portal.
- June 2025: the final ILEP update; ILEP is being phased out for QQI’s TrustEd Ireland mark.
- Jan 2027: the minimum wage rises from €14.15 to €14.94 (announced; needs legislation).
Studying in Ireland from India: 8 things to know
Ireland suits Indian students who want a short master’s and time to find work after it: a master’s usually takes 1 year, and graduates get 12 + 12 months on Stamp 1G.
- Eligible courses only. A study visa needs a full-time, in-person programme on the ILEP or the TrustEd Ireland list. Check both: a programme is on one or the other. Part-time, online and distance courses never qualify.
- ILEP is being phased out for QQI's TrustEd Ireland mark (final ILEP update June 2025). Check the programme, not just the college.
- Visa money: €10,000 of immediate access for living costs, plus fees. Show 6 months of bank statements; explain every large deposit, loans included. Credit cards don't count.
- Fees before the visa: pay all of a fee under €6,000, or at least €6,000 of a larger one. Colleges must refund within 20 working days if the visa is refused.
- Visa English: IELTS 5.0, Duolingo 75, PTE 30, TOEFL iBT 61 (under 2 years old). Universities want more, usually IELTS 6.5 with no band under 6.0.
- Private medical insurance is compulsory for every student. Travel insurance is accepted for year 1 only (€25,000 accident + €25,000 disease, hospital included).
- Work 20 hours a week in term, 40 hours in June–September and 15 Dec–15 Jan. Minimum wage €14.15 (2026), rising to €14.94 from Jan 2027 (announced; needs legislation).
- After graduating: Stamp 1G, for bachelor's and postgraduate graduates. Any Level 8 award (Honours Bachelor's, Higher Diploma) gives 12 months. Level 9/10 (master's, PhD) gives 12 + 12 (the second year needs job-search evidence). Level 7 gets none. Then a Critical Skills permit (€36,848 for a recent graduate, otherwise €40,904) → Stamp 4 after 21 months.
How do Irish universities and master’s degrees work?
An Irish master’s is Level 9 on the NFQ and usually takes 1 year (90 ECTS). You apply directly to each institution; there is no central system or national deadline, and September is the main intake.
- Types: universities (UCD, Trinity, UCC, Galway, Maynooth, UL, DCU, RCSI, which is private) · 5 technological universities (TU Dublin, MTU, TUS, ATU, SETU) + 2 institutes of technology · fee-paying private colleges (business and professional; check the accreditation and the eligible list).
- NFQ levels: Level 7 = Ordinary Bachelor · Level 8 = Honours Bachelor / Higher Diploma (1 year) · Level 9 = Master's (usually 1 year, 90 ECTS) / PG Diploma · Level 10 = PhD. The level decides the Stamp 1G length.
- Admission: apply direct to each institution. There is no central system or national deadline for postgraduates. It is competitive per programme, and meeting the minimum is no guarantee.
- Intakes: September (main); some institutions also start in January (e.g. DCU).

Can I apply with an Indian degree, and is a 3-year bachelor’s accepted?
At some institutions: a 3-year bachelor’s is accepted at UL (honours) and TU Dublin (professional), but there is no national rule, so check each programme. Trinity and UCD want a 2:1 or equivalent.
- No national credential check (no APS-style gate). Each institution assesses Indian degrees from the grading scale and semester-wise mark sheets (a consolidated sheet alone is not enough at UL).
- Typical bars: Trinity and UCD want a 2:1 or equivalent. UL: a 4-year or 3-year honours degree, first division, 55–70%. TU Dublin: 2:2 from 50% (Tier 1) / 55% (Tier 2), 2:1 from 65% / 70% (3-year professional degrees by CGPA: 2:2 from 5–5.5/10).
- 3-year bachelor's: accepted at some institutions (UL honours, TU Dublin professional). There is no national rule, so check each programme.
- Class XII English instead of IELTS: only Galway publishes a route (70–75%+ from CBSE, CISCE and some boards, with DigiLocker), and it excludes Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, UP, Gujarat, Rajasthan and others. Trinity, UCD, UCC, Maynooth, UL, DCU, TU Dublin, ATU, MTU, SETU and RCSI name no Indian Class XII route. UCC, Maynooth and MTU give Indian degrees no automatic exemption, and ATU refuses MOI letters. Plan for a test; the visa wants one anyway.
- Backlogs: Maynooth allows at most 6 (3-year degree) or 8 (4-year degree). UCC and Maynooth bars are 55–60% for a 2H2, lower for Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Calcutta universities.
- Bachelor's: Trinity 80–85% in Class XII; UL 70% across X and XII.

How do I get an Irish student visa from India?
You apply for a Long Stay “D” study visa on AVATS online, then give biometrics at VFS. The fee is ₹5,300 (single entry) plus VFS charges, and New Delhi decides study visas in 4–8 weeks.
- Long Stay "D" study visa. Apply on AVATS online → VFS (biometrics) → passport held by the embassy. Fee ₹5,300 (single) / ₹9,000 (multiple) + VFS charges; not refunded.
- When: up to 3 months before travel (ISD; New Delhi accepts 4 months for study). New Delhi decides study visas in 4–8 weeks. Applications lodged under 3 weeks before the start may not be decided in time. No status updates; check the daily decision list.
- Checklist: passport valid 12+ months after arrival; unconditional offer with fees paid (≥€6,000); proof of payment; 6 months of statements (applicant + sponsor); €10,000+ with its source; application letter (explain gaps and any change of field); English certificate. Official translations only, no self-translation.
- Declare every earlier refusal (any country), with the letters. Hiding one = refusal and up to a 5-year ban.
- The embassy may phone you or your sponsor. After a refusal, appeal within 2 months (free) or reapply.
- Part-time or online study does not qualify. Family can't come, except for PhD students or students with clear private means.
- A visa issued without a VFS biometrics visit is fake; Ireland issues no eVisas.

When should I start preparing?
Start 12 months before a September intake: shortlist from September to December, apply between November and March (UCD scholarships by end-February, GOI-IES by mid-March), and lodge the visa in May–July.
| When | Step |
|---|---|
| Sep–Dec (12–9 months before) | Shortlist; check the ILEP / TrustEd listing, NFQ level, Indian grade bar and IELTS level. |
| Nov–Jan | IELTS (aim 6.5 / 6.0). Collect semester mark sheets and the grading scale; write the SOP and CV. |
| Nov–Mar | Apply to universities (rolling). Scholarships: UCD by end-Feb, GOI-IES by mid-Mar. |
| Feb–Jun | Offers arrive; pay the deposit. Apply for halls. Build 6 months of bank history with €10,000+. |
| May–Jul | Pay fees (≥€6,000) → unconditional offer. AVATS + VFS. |
| Jun–Aug | Visa in 4–8 weeks. Buy insurance. Find housing (avoid scams). |
| Arrival (Sep) | Start the course; register with ISD within 90 days (Burgh Quay, Dublin, €300). Bank account, PPS number. |
| Each year | Renew online 12 weeks before the IRP expires. |
| After results | Apply for Stamp 1G within 6 months, before leaving Ireland. |
Can I work while studying, and what happens on arrival?
You can work 20 hours a week in term and 40 hours in June–September and 15 Dec–15 Jan. Register with ISD within 90 days of arriving (€300), and keep private medical insurance at all times.
- Registration: ISD (not GNIB) since Jan 2025, by appointment through the portal. The IRP card is posted in ~10 working days. Renewals have taken 6–17+ weeks in 2026; apply early.
- Housing: hard to find. Landlords can ask for at most 2 months up front (deposit + 1 month's rent); student accommodation can ask for more. A room in the landlord's home is not covered by tenancy law. Scam signs: landlord "abroad", no viewing, cash, wire or crypto payment. Always view first; report to the Gardaí or Threshold (1800 454 454).
- Health: keep private insurance all the time (cancelling it breaks the visa conditions). GP visits are paid.
- Work: PPS number + register the first job with Revenue (myAccount), or emergency tax applies. No self-employment. Credit-bearing placements can exceed 20 hours.
- Studies: show progress each year. No course change in year 1 (except in very exceptional cases); no moving from a master's down to a bachelor's. Exams missed for reasons outside the student's control can get a 4-month extension; there is no extension to repeat a year. 7-year cap on student time.

Can I stay and work in Ireland after graduating?
Yes: a master’s (Level 9) gives Stamp 1G for 12 months, renewed for 12 more on proof of job-hunting. Apply within 6 months of your result, before leaving Ireland; Level 7 gives none.
- Stamp 1G (ISD policy document): open to any graduate of an ILEP course with an Irish award at Level 8 or above.
- Level 8 (Honours Bachelor's, Higher Diploma): 12 months, capped so Stamp 2 + 1G stays within 7 years.
- Level 9 or above (master's, PG Diploma, PhD): 12 months, renewed for 12 more on proof of job-hunting (interviews, agency sign-ups), capped at 8 years in total. One ISD page words the second year as "master's" only, so confirm for a PG Diploma.
- Level 7: not eligible.
- Used at most twice (e.g. again after a later Level 9). Full-time work, no self-employment, no permit needed. €300. Must hold a current Stamp 2, apply within 6 months of the result, before leaving Ireland.
- Critical Skills Employment Permit: CSOL job, 2-year offer, €40,904 (or €36,848 if the qualification is under 12 months old), or €68,911 for most jobs. €1,000 fee; employer applies 12+ weeks ahead. The spouse can work (Stamp 1G).
- General Employment Permit: most jobs, €36,605 (or €34,009 with a recent Irish degree); usually needs a labour market test.
- Stamp 4 after 21 months on a CSEP (about 5 years on a GEP). Citizenship after 5 years of reckonable residence: student years don't count, Stamp 1G does.
- Back in India: AIU equivalence (online).

Common mistakes Indian students make
The costliest mistakes: a programme not on the ILEP or TrustEd list, getting the Stamp 1G length wrong, and unexplained deposits or loans in the funds evidence.
- A programme not on the ILEP or TrustEd list.
- Getting the Stamp 1G length wrong: 12 months for any Level 8 award (bachelor's or Higher Diploma); 12 + 12 for Level 9/10, the second year only with job-search evidence (PG Diploma wording conflicts); none for Level 7; earlier study time can cut it short.
- Unexplained deposits or loans, or a weak sponsor file.
- Paying fees or lodging the visa late (under 3 weeks before the start).
- Hiding a previous visa refusal.
- Self-translated documents; missing gap or change-of-field explanations.
- Travel insurance at renewal, or cancelling insurance.
- Housing scams; arriving with no housing.
- Working over 20 hours in term, or self-employment.
- Leaving Ireland before registering Stamp 1G.
