What changed recently
- July 2025: Indian applicants need a NAWA statement, a B2 language document and, for a bachelor’s, a compulsory entrance exam.
- 27 April 2026: residence-permit applications are electronic only, in MOS.
- 30 June 2026: the old rules ended; private academic and public vocational universities now need Interior Ministry approval to take foreign students.
Studying in Poland from India: 10 things to know
Poland suits Indian students who want low tuition and free access to work while studying: fees are usually EUR 2,000–6,000 a year, but you need a NAWA statement and an approved or exempt university, and the job-search permit is 9 months.
- Two steps: a national D visa ("student") from India, then in Poland a temporary residence permit for studies (karta pobytu), applied for online in MOS (electronic only since 27 April 2026), never from abroad, before the visa expires. First permit: 15 months.
- New since July 2025 for Indian applicants: a NAWA Director's written statement on the Class XII certificate (bachelor's) or degree (master's), a B2 language document from a fixed list, and for a bachelor's a compulsory entrance exam.
- Not every university can take foreign students. Public academic universities (and military, state-service and some church-run universities) are exempt from approval; private academic and public vocational universities need approval by the Minister of the Interior (old rules ended 30 June 2026). The Interior Ministry publishes the list of approved institutions (134 on 5 Oct 2026, each approved for 5 years). Check the university has the Interior Ministry approval to take foreign students. Bans of up to 5 years are possible, and foreigners may not exceed 50% of a university's students.
- English proof (B2): IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, PTE Academic 59, Cambridge B2 First and similar; for a master's, a degree that states English as the language of instruction also counts. Duolingo is not accepted. The Embassy recommends IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 79.
- Tuition (non-EU): usually EUR 2,000–6,000 a year (MBA EUR 8,000–12,000). Proof of fee payment for the semester or year is needed for the visa.
- Funds: at least PLN 1,010 a month after rent, plus rent, plus PLN 2,500 for the return journey, plus fees. A bank certificate counts only from a bank in Poland, the EU, EFTA or Switzerland ("The bank MUST be located there"); an Indian bank statement and an education-loan letter are not on the list, and "No other documents will be accepted". The same rule applies to the visa and the residence permit.
- Work: with the study residence permit, free access to the labour market (no work permit; no hour limit set).
- After graduating: a 9-month job-search permit, granted once, applied for in Poland immediately after the diploma. Leaving Poland after the diploma forfeits it.
How do Polish universities and master’s degrees work?
A Polish master’s (magister) takes 1.5–2 years, and October is the main intake. Only full-time degree studies lead to a study permit; part-time, postgraduate and MBA studies are “education, not studies”.
- Institutions: public or private; academic (research, can award doctorates) or vocational (practical). All are overseen by the Polish Accreditation Committee (PKA).
- Degrees: first cycle (licencjat / inzynier) 3–4 years, at least 180 ECTS; second cycle (magister) 1.5–2 years; long-cycle master's 4.5–6 years (medicine, law, pharmacy and others); doctoral school 3–4 years, free, with a scholarship.
- Courses that do not lead to a study permit: "part-time higher education, postgraduate studies, MBA studies" are "education, not studies". Only full-time first-cycle, second-cycle, long-cycle studies, doctoral schools and some preparatory courses qualify. The 9-month graduate permit needs a Polish degree. Courses that lead to a study permit and the post-study permit: full-time degree programmes at approved or exempt universities only; part-time (niestacjonarne, weekend, evening, extramural), postgraduate (studia podyplomowe) and non-degree MBA programmes do not. University fee lists mix part-time and full-time programmes, so check the mode.
- Admission: a rector's decision; foreigners on fee-paying terms do not compete with Polish applicants. University of Warsaw bachelor's: school results (at least 50/100) plus the entrance exam (at least 50/100).
- Language: programmes are taught in Polish or English. Many jobs do not need Polish, but basic Polish helps, and permanent residence needs B1.
- Intakes: October (main); some programmes also start in February.
- Grading: 5 (very good) to 2 (fail).

Can I apply with an Indian degree, and is a 3-year bachelor’s accepted?
Yes, if your degree gives master’s access in India and carries a NAWA statement: no page sets a 4-year minimum and each university decides. You also need B2 English (IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72 or PTE 59).
- Master's (information only): a degree that gives master's access in India gives the same right in Poland, unless the institution or programme was not accredited. No page opened sets a 4-year minimum; each university decides (e.g. "Bachelor Degree in related field", assessed individually). Required: the degree with a NAWA statement, plus B2.
- Bachelor's from Class XII: Indian certificates (HSC, Standard 12, ISC) are not automatically recognised. Required: the certificate with a NAWA statement, B2, and a passed entrance exam. The D visa for a bachelor's is issued only after the NAWA statement. A preparatory course alone does not give an Indian student the study permit (only Belarus is listed).
- NAWA statement: online in SYRENA, free, Polish PDF, no apostille needed for SYRENA, English documents need no translation. No fixed processing time. Agents cannot apply without a notarised authorisation.
- Grades: NAWA does not convert grades; the university sets the rules. No minimum percentage for Indian degrees was found.
- Final-year students: some universities let you apply before the certificate arrives (e.g. Wroclaw Tech).
- Nostrification is not needed to study.

How do I apply to a Polish university?
You apply through each university’s own online system (IRK), paying about PLN 85–100; there is no national portal. Indian documents must be authenticated by a Regional Authentication Centre, then apostilled by the MEA.
- Through each university's own online system (IRK); there is no national portal.
- Application fee: about PLN 85–100 (University of Warsaw, Wroclaw Tech, SGH); University of Wroclaw EUR 23–27.
- Example deadlines (Wroclaw Tech master's): October 2026 intake 1 June – 21 July 2026; February 2027 intake 15 Oct – 13 Nov 2026. University of Warsaw's 2026/27 admissions have closed.
- Indian documents must be apostilled by the MEA, after authentication by the state's Regional Authentication Centre; translation into Polish or English. Originals are submitted in person at the university after arrival.
- Pay before the visa: proof of payment is on the visa checklist (Gdansk Tech: first-semester fee about 2 weeks after the offer; University of Wroclaw: full first year).
- Refunds follow the university's contract; the Embassy does not mediate. Example (University of Wroclaw): EUR 200–300 is kept after a visa refusal or missing appointment, and an agent's commission is also deducted.

How much does it cost, and how much money must I show?
Tuition is usually EUR 2,000–6,000 a year, and you must show PLN 1,010 a month after rent, plus rent and PLN 2,500 for the return journey. An Indian bank statement or education-loan letter is not on the accepted list.
- Tuition examples 2026/27 (non-EU): University of Warsaw EUR 1,000–9,000 a year (e.g. Data Science and Business Analytics EUR 4,900); SGH master's EUR 2,400 a semester (Finance and Accounting EUR 3,100); Gdansk Tech PLN 9,000–10,750 a semester; AGH EUR 1,250–3,500 a semester; University of Wroclaw about EUR 3,200–4,200 a year; Adam Mickiewicz PLN 1,900–4,000 a semester. Private university fees could not be read.
- Funds (visa and permit): PLN 1,010 a month after rent + rent + PLN 2,500 return (+ PLN 823 a month and PLN 2,500 for each family member).
- Accepted proof (Embassy checklist; the same list as the residence-permit regulation): traveller's cheques; a credit-card limit certificate ("any bank located in India or Poland or another country is allowed"); a certificate of money in a bank in Poland, the EU, EFTA or Switzerland ("The bank MUST be located there"); a scholarship award; or a notarised sponsor letter with the sponsor's employment and monthly salary certificate (or one of the documents above). "No other documents will be accepted or taken into consideration."
- Not on the list: a statement or certificate from an Indian bank account, an education-loan sanction letter, or a parent's Indian bank statement (earlier checklists said "it cannot be a bank located in India"). A parent can sponsor with a notarised letter and the parent's employment and salary certificate. No listed document fits a self-employed parent's income, and no page says whether loan money held in a Polish or EU bank account counts: confirm with the Embassy before applying. Certificates must be under one month old. For the permit, funds cover the whole first permit (15 months).
- Living costs: from PLN 1,500 to 2,000 a month (NAWA); dormitory PLN 400–600; more in Warsaw and tourist cities.
- Health insurance: voluntary NFZ cover for non-EU students PLN 55.80 a month.
- Permit costs: stamp duty PLN 340; residence card PLN 100, half price for students.
- Scholarships: Banach NAWA Programme (India eligible): master's, PLN 2,500 a month, tuition waived at public universities, PLN 2,500 travel; the 2026 call closed 8 May. Polish-descent applicants get 30% off fees. No state student support for foreigners.

How do I get a Polish student visa from India?
You apply for a national D visa (“student”) at VFS after registering in e-Konsulat; the fee is INR 21,120 and the decision takes 15 days, up to 30. In Poland you then apply for a residence permit in MOS.
- National D visa ("student"), valid up to one year, at a VFS centre (Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi), in person.
- Jurisdiction: New Delhi Embassy for the north and east (incl. Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, MP, J&K, the North-East); Mumbai Consulate General for the south and west (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and others).
- Appointment: register in e-Konsulat; slots go by order of registration; a VFS e-form is also mandatory. Apply no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before travel.
- Fee: INR 21,120, non-refundable; VFS service fee extra (amount not confirmed).
- Checklist: original admission certificate; proof of fee payment; apostilled certificates with the NAWA statement (bachelor's) or apostilled degree (master's); B2 certificate; one-way flight reservation; travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 from an insurer on the MFA list; accommodation proof showing the monthly cost; funds (above); residence proof in the jurisdiction.
- Decision: 15 days, up to 30; the checklist warns that applying less than 30 days before travel is at your own risk. An interview is possible. Missing documents can be added within 7 days.
- Refusal: grounds include insufficient funds, doubts about the purpose of stay, false documents, or a university that mainly facilitates illegal entry. Appeal within 14 days of collecting the passport (fee INR 21,120).
- No agents: the missions do not work with agents; using one gives no advantage.
- Spouse and children: no student route. Family reunification needs a sponsor who has lived in Poland at least 2 years on consecutive temporary permits (the current one granted for at least 1 year), with stable income, health insurance and housing; a reunified family member may work freely. On a 15-month first permit and a 2-year master's this is rarely reached before graduating: confirm with the voivode office before applying.

When should I start preparing?
Start about 12 months before an October intake: the NAWA statement has no fixed processing time, deadlines can fall in July, and the visa decision takes 15–30 days.
| When | Step |
|---|---|
| Oct–Jan (12–9 months before) | Shortlist approved or public academic universities and full-time programmes. Book an accepted B2 test. Start RAC authentication and MEA apostille. |
| Jan–May | NAWA statement in SYRENA (no fixed time). Banach scholarship (call closed 8 May in 2026). |
| Feb–Jul | Apply in each university's IRK (e.g. Wroclaw Tech 1 June – 21 July 2026); earlier rounds leave more time for the visa. |
| On admission | Pay the semester or year fee; get the original admission certificate; book a dormitory; put funds in an accepted form; buy EUR 30,000 travel medical insurance. |
| Up to 6 months before travel | Register in e-Konsulat; VFS e-form; attend VFS (INR 21,120). Decision in 15–30 days. |
| On arrival | Hand in originals at the university; register your address by day 30 (PESEL follows); apply for the residence permit in MOS before the visa expires; NFZ insurance. |
| Each year | Renew the permit before it expires; tell the voivode within 15 working days if studies stop. |
| At graduation | Apply for the 9-month job-search permit immediately, while in Poland. |
Can I work while studying, and what happens on arrival?
Yes: with the study residence permit you have free access to the labour market, with no hour limit set. On arrival, register your address by the 30th day and apply for the residence permit in MOS before your visa expires.
- Residence permit (MOS): log in with a Polish trusted profile; the university completes an annex online; one visit for fingerprints (no sooner than 7 days after the summons) and one to collect the card. Foreign documents need a sworn Polish translation. Legal deadline 60 days, "may take longer"; actual waiting times were not published. While waiting you stay legally, but you cannot travel in Schengen, and returning from India needs a visa.
- Address registration (zameldowanie): by the 30th day, in person, free; a PESEL number follows automatically.
- Housing: dormitories are cheapest (shared room about EUR 105–235, single EUR 140–350 a month) but not guaranteed: contact the university early. Shared-flat room EUR 235–515; studio from EUR 420 (Warsaw EUR 585–820+). Deposit is often one month's rent.
- Work: free labour-market access with the study permit. Before the permit, a full-time student at an approved or exempt university may also work without a work permit; placements in the study programme need no permit. Minimum wage PLN 4,806 gross a month (2026).
- Tax and insurance on jobs: pay from a job or mandate contract up to age 26 is income-tax-free up to PLN 85,528 a year for a Polish tax resident (more than 183 days in the year, or centre of interests in Poland); students up to 26 on a mandate contract pay no pension or disability contributions. Confirm tax residence with the tax office before relying on the relief.
- Renting: a deposit may not exceed 12 months' rent (6 months under an "occasional lease", which also needs a notarial statement from the tenant). Police warn of fake flat adverts: see the flat in person, never pay a booking fee or deposit before signing, check who owns it.
- Bank account and SIM: a passport opens an account (some banks want a stay of 6 months or more); a Polish SIM is registered with your passport. Radio/TV licence fee: one per household, registered at Poczta Polska.
- Discrimination: Commissioner for Human Rights, free helpline 800 676 676.
- Keep the permit: you must tell the voivode in writing within 15 working days if you stop studying; universities report removals, and the voivode checks the register every March and October. A later permit can be refused after removal from the student list. Renewals last the rest of the studies plus 3 months (maximum 3 years).
- Travel: with the card, Schengen travel up to 90 days in 180.
- Emergency: 112.

Can I stay and work in Poland after graduating?
Yes, for a limited time: a 9-month job-search permit, granted once and applied for in Poland immediately after the diploma. Leaving Poland after the diploma forfeits it.
- Job-search permit: 9 months, once, applied for in Poland immediately after the diploma; needs the diploma, insurance, funds and guaranteed accommodation; PLN 340. Not granted if you already have a job or an employer: apply for a work permit instead.
- Work without a work permit: graduates of a Polish university may work without a work permit while their residence permit is valid.
- EU Blue Card: salary at least 150% of the previous year's average national wage.
- Permanent (long-term EU) residence: after 5 years; half of study time counts; stable income and Polish B1 needed.
- Citizenship: e.g. 3 years after permanent or long-term residence, with income, housing and a Polish language certificate. India does not allow dual citizenship (Indian citizenship ends on taking another).
- Back in India: AIU equivalence, online only.

Common mistakes Indian students make
The costliest mistakes: a university not approved to admit foreigners, a part-time or postgraduate programme, no NAWA statement, and funds shown with an Indian bank statement or a loan letter.
- A university not approved to admit foreigners, under a ban, or over the 50% cap.
- A part-time, weekend, online, postgraduate or non-degree MBA programme (not "studies"; no study permit).
- No NAWA statement, or applying for it too late.
- Duolingo or a score below B2.
- Funds shown with an Indian bank statement or a loan letter instead of a listed document.
- Documents not apostilled, or apostilled without RAC authentication first.
- July application deadlines plus a 15–30 day visa decision and appointment queues.
- Letting the visa expire before filing the residence permit in MOS, or trying to file it from India.
- Travelling home while the permit is pending without a visa to come back.
- Leaving Poland after the diploma before applying for the 9-month permit.
- Missing the 30-day address registration or the 15-working-day notice when studies stop.
- Paying a full year to a university that keeps EUR 200–300 (or an agent's commission) on refunds.
